Whether you're brand new to smoke cleansing or simply looking to deepen your practice, our detailed Smoke Cleansing Guide will help you create more intentional and meaningful rituals. Inside, you'll learn how to safely use sacred herbs, set intentions, cleanse your space, and incorporate smoke cleansing into your spiritual practice.

While many people are familiar with white sage, cultures around the world have long burned a wide variety of herbs, woods, and resins in their own traditions. Blue Sage, Cedar, Yerba Santa, Rosemary, Dragon's Blood Sage, and Palo Santo each carry their own unique history, symbolism, and intentions.

Choosing your plant(s)

Every smudging session should be conducted with a few basic elements on hand. The first of these is the plant(s) with which you are smoke cleansing. These plants can take many forms like aromatic dragon's blood sage, Peruvian palo santo, traditional blue sage, and many more. Additionally, the sage can be in a bundle/stick or burned in loose leaf form.

Selecting your vessel

After selecting the herbs, wood, or resin you plan to burn, it's important to consider safety—especially if you'll be practicing smoke cleansing indoors. You'll need a heat-safe vessel to catch ash and safely hold your herbs during and after your ritual.

Many Indigenous traditions use abalone shells during ceremonial practices, while others may choose ceramic bowls, cast iron dishes, or other heat-resistant containers. Whatever vessel you choose, make sure it is sturdy and designed to withstand heat. Do not use plastic containers as they can melt, and use caution with glass, as it can become very hot and may crack or burn your hands.

A properly chosen vessel will help you practice smoke cleansing safely while allowing you to focus on your intentions and ritual.

Avoid your breath

The third element to consider is how you will tend to the embers and guide the smoke during your ritual. You may notice that we use the word fan rather than blow. In many traditions, it is believed that blowing directly on the smoke may disrupt or disperse the energy and intentions being carried through the ritual.

Instead, gently fan or waft the smoke using a feather, hand fan, cloth, or even your hand. This allows you to intentionally direct the smoke toward yourself, your space, or any objects you wish to cleanse.

If your herbs or wood extinguish during your smoke cleansing ritual, don't worry—this is completely normal. Simply relight your smoke cleansing medium with a match or lighter and continue your practice with intention. Setting your intention

The fourth—and perhaps most important—element of smoke cleansing is your intention or blessing. Intention is at the heart of every ritual. If you're feeling especially nervous, angry, sad, or distracted, you may wish to wait until you are in a calmer, more focused state of mind before beginning your practice.

Many traditions believe that smoke cleansing is an opportunity to connect with ourselves, our ancestors, the Great Creator, Spirit, or the energies around us. Before beginning your ritual, take a moment to reflect on what you hope to invite into your life. Are you seeking protection, grounding, abundance, clarity, peace, or spiritual growth? Setting your intention with purpose can help create a more meaningful and mindful experience.

Smoke Cleansing Instructions

1. Practice Safely
Always burn sacred herbs, woods, or resins in a well-ventilated area. Never leave burning herbs unattended, and keep them away from children, pets, and flammable materials. If you have asthma, respiratory sensitivities, allergies, or other health concerns related to smoke or incense products, consult your healthcare provider before using smoke cleansing products.

2. Set Your Intention
Before beginning, take a few moments to center yourself. Reflect on your blessing, intention, prayer, or what you hope to invite into your life through your smoke cleansing ritual. Many traditions believe that intention is one of the most important aspects of the practice.

3. Light Your Herbs
Hold your sage bundle or other smoke cleansing medium at one end and point it downward at approximately a 45-degree angle. Bring a flame to the downward-pointed tip while slowly rotating the bundle to ensure an even burn. Allow the herbs to catch fire briefly, then after a strong ember is established, gently extinguish the flame by fanning it out with a feather, your hand, or another fanning tool. Avoid blowing directly on the herbs, as some traditions believe this may disrupt the energy of the ritual. Continue fanning until you have established a steady ember. To produce more smoke, simply fan the ember or relight the bundle as needed.

4. Use a Heat-Safe Vessel
Place the smoking herbs in a heat-safe vessel, such as an abalone shell, ceramic bowl, or cast iron dish, to safely catch ash and embers.

5. Cleanse Yourself First
Many traditions begin by cleansing oneself before cleansing a space. Gently guide the smoke around your body with intention. You may begin with your hands to prepare for the ritual, your feet or legs to walk through life in a good way, your mouth to speak kindly, your eyes to see clearly, your ears to listen openly, your heart to feel compassion, and your mind to think positively.

6. Cleanse Your Space
Move through your space while gently directing the smoke throughout the room—from floor to ceiling and corner to corner. Continue into additional rooms if desired.

7. Cleanse Other People or Objects
You may also cleanse other people or meaningful objects by gently guiding the smoke around them. Some traditions move in counterclockwise motions, while others follow practices specific to their own spiritual path. Follow the traditions and intentions that resonate with you.

8. Maintain the Ember
If the ember begins to fade, simply fan the herbs or relight them as needed. When your ritual is complete, safely extinguish the embers in your heat-safe vessel.

9. Using Palo Santo
These same steps can also be followed when using Palo Santo sticks. Light one end, allow it to burn briefly, extinguish the flame, and use the fragrant smoke with intention.

10. Working with Selenite
If you also practice crystal healing, your selenite wand can be used to cleanse and amplify the energy of other crystals. Many people choose to place their selenite outdoors or near moonlight as part of their personal crystal practice.

Blessing

Many people choose to begin their smoke cleansing ritual with a blessing, prayer, or spoken intention. Some prefer to recite traditional blessings, while others feel called to speak their own words from the heart. There is no single "right" way to approach this practice. For some, the ritual is deeply personal and internal, and they may choose to sit quietly in meditation without speaking at all.

The most important element is your intention. Whether spoken aloud or held silently within, your intention can help create a more meaningful and mindful experience. The following is one example of a traditional-style blessing that you are welcome to use, adapt, or draw inspiration from in your own practice.

Great Creator, I come before you with an open heart.

I ask that you hear me, and I thank you for this sacred plant.

I respectfully light this sacred plant and humbly call on its spirit.

As it's sacred smoke touches my body, I ask that it cleanse my mind, body, and spirit.

As its sacred smoke fills this room, I ask that it purify, protect, and bless this space.

As its sacred smoke rises, I ask that it carry away all negativity, fears, and attachments.

As this sacred smoke leaves, I ask that light, joy, and love take its place.
