What is Smoke Cleansing?

Smoke cleansing is the practice of burning sacred herbs, woods, or resins to cleanse a person, object, or space of unwanted energy while inviting intention, mindfulness, and spiritual connection. Cultures around the world have incorporated the ceremonial burning of plants into their spiritual and wellness traditions for centuries.

You may also hear the term "smudging" used to describe smoke cleansing. Traditionally, smudging refers to specific ceremonial practices practiced by many Indigenous peoples of North America. At Senseful Healing, we primarily use the broader term "smoke cleansing" to respectfully acknowledge these traditions while recognizing that many cultures have their own unique plant-burning practices.

Each herb, wood, or resin carries its own unique history, symbolism, and intention. Blue Sage is often associated with manifestation and abundance, Cedar with blessing and protection, Yerba Santa with grounding and spiritual growth, and Palo Santo with cleansing and presence. During a smoke cleansing ritual, intention plays an important role as you connect with yourself, your space, and the energies around you.

Whether you're just beginning your journey or looking to deepen an existing practice, there is always more to explore. Our Plant Guide and free Smoke Cleansing Guide can help you discover the meanings and traditions behind different sacred herbs and smoke cleansing practices.
